Passing Up Opportunities to Reach My Goals

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my long term career goals and how I’m going to reach them.  It took me a while to realize what my goals were, so having them is one more step in the right direction.  This new focus every day feels really amazing.  I must’ve felt so lost before!

As you know, I’m a big believer in taking advantage of every opportunity that comes my way and I like being involved in many different projects.  I’ve recently seen so many new opportunities within my department and I wanted to take advantage of all of them.  Only problem is that I can’t possibly do everything, so I have to choose.  I have to take a chance and choose one thing to focus on.

I sat down and took a really good look at all upcoming projects.  I compared each one to my long-term career goal.  If the project didn’t help me reach my goal, no matter how interesting it was, then I had to pass it up.  I mainly focused on the skills I would gain from each project and then used that to evaluate whether or not it was worth taking on.  Some of the projects help gain technical skills while other projects will help improve my soft skills, like communication and networking.

I love having a plan in place!  It really makes every day more exciting.  Since I have to be at work anyway, I might as well enjoy what I’m doing!

Until next time,
Shaindy
