Part 2: Superstorm Sandy- How We Survived

Superstorm Sandy caused us a lot of aggravation, but luckily we were prepared for it! One thing that really worried me was how I’d entertain two little boys (ages 2 and 3) locked inside the house, while I was trying to work. I was one of the only people in my department with power, so I made sure to login and monitor what was going on. Luckily I didn’t have too many pressing things to do, because if I did, I’m not sure I would’ve been able to pull it off.
DS2 was home Monday through Wednesday, but DS1 was home the entire week! Keeping these boys entertained was quite a challenge, but I survived! That’s the main reason for my blogging break. My kids love the computer, so it’s not worth going onto it when I don’t want them to play with it.
Like every other family, we have a ton of toys, but my kids seem to get bored with all the variety we have. I found some new toys and some toys that we haven’t used in a while and kept everyone on a schedule. Of course that schedule included sleeping late, so that took up like an extra hour. Then we were onto breakfast, which also took longer than usual since we weren’t in a rush to go anywhere. We got dressed and then it was playtime.
To keep the kids occupied I took out different activities for them and we did one thing at a time. When I saw they were getting bored we cleaned up and started something else. Then it was lunchtime and naptime (my favorite!). After naptime we continued with more playtime, dinner, bath and every night we had a movie night- mostly to reward me and DH (kid-friendly movies, of course) for surviving the day. Then, at last, bedtime arrived.
I’m not sure why I had so little confidence in myself to get through the long days, but now that I did, I wouldn’t have changed anything. Spending so much time with my kids and DH was amazing. We don’t get to do it often, so this was a nice little hidden surprise that Sandy brought along.

Until next time,
Shaindy
