tAPPing into Tech: Evernote

Tapping into Tech is where I review my favorite apps and tell you why they are super awesome for working moms.

Evernote is an easy-to-use, free app that helps you remember everything across all of the devices you use. Stay organized, save your ideas and improve productivity. Evernote lets you take notes, capture photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders–and makes these notes completely searchable, whether you are at home, at work, or on the go.” —Evernote app description

How I Use It

I never had a good way to organize online resources until I started using Evernote.  I just had a huge inbox, bookmarks and a lot of lost ideas.  With Evernote, I can save all the important information I come across in one place.  Each item is its own “note.”  All of my notes are categorized, making them super easy to find. Screenshot_2013-10-14-21-25-24These are some examples of the notes I have:

  • DS1’s school list (I was class mom)
  • List of nut-free snacks (also for DS1’s school, in case he’s Shabbos Abba)- I just took a picture of the one sent out from school and stored it in a note
  • Recipes I see online or through Facebook
  • Directions to an office site I frequently travel to via public transportation
  • Link to my packing list (from before I posted it here)
  • List of baby gifts from when DS3 was born

There is a premium version, but the free version is perfectly fine for my needs.

Features I Like

  • Easy to categorize and tag notes
  • Easy to share notes via email, link, Facebook…
  • Versatility- you can create a note for a link, document, photo, list… basically anything.
  • Syncs with all devices- phone, computer, iPad, etc…
  • Web Clipper- a small icon you can add to your browser’s toolbar to easily clip items and create notes on the fly
  • Sorting by date or notebook

What’s Missing

One thing I think that’s lacking is Evernote’s list making capabilities.  I found it hard to make check lists and take a quick glance at them… so naturally, I found another app I like for that called Google Keep.

In Conclusion

I think this app is great.  It has so many more features I don’t even use.  Are there other apps just like this?  Yes.  It’s free, easy to navigate and works well, so instead of carrying around piles of papers around with me, I have an extra app.

Until next time,
Shaindy
