Review of My Winter 2016 Minimalist Wardrobe – What I liked and What I’ll Do Differently Next Time Around

winter 2016 minimalist wardrobe

This was the first complete season I had my minimalist wardrobe and I loved it! Now that I’ve fully lived it I wanted to share with you what I loved, learned and will do better next time around.

When I set out to have a minimalist wardrobe I fell in love with the idea of simplicity. With only a few items in my wardrobe – all of which I loved and felt good in – there was no wasted time in the morning deciding what to wear. Decision fatigue was a thing of the past.

Minimalist Wardrobe

My wardrobe consisted of the following items:

  • 4 short pencil skirts
    • 2 black
    • 1 navy
    • 1 hunter green
  • 2 long black skirts
  • 1 sweater
  • 5 shirts/blouses
  • 2 pairs shoes
  • 1 casual vest
  • 4 colored t-shirts/shells

Total: 19 items

My Style Guide/ Uniform

Remember a while ago I told you that I loved the idea of having a work uniform? Well, I got a lot of negative feedback on that idea saying how boring and weird it was.

By having my minimalist wardrobe I’ve been able to create a sort of work uniform. I’ll call it a style guide that I’ve created for myself.

I only have 3 solid colored skirts. Each shirt matches with 1 or 2 skirts. In the morning I choose my shirt, quickly pick the skirt I want and then I accessorize.

Accessories, Shoes, Makeup

When it comes to accessories I’ve also decided to be minimal. I consistently wear the same jewelry (necklace, bracelet and rings). I wear the same rings every day. I then choose from 3 necklaces and a few bracelets. Based on my shirt I basically know which jewelry I will choose.

After the jewelry I have to choose shoes. I only have 3 pairs of shoes, so based on my outfit and activity for the day I know which shoes to choose.  Add a shaitel and my basic daily makeup routine and within minutes I’m out the door!

No All-Year Wardrobe for Me

Now you may be wondering what I didn’t like so much.

Well, here it is. When I set out to create my minimalist wardrobe I thought I’d be able to pull off an all-year-round wardrobe. But as time went on I realized that I need to change it up. I also realized that I didn’t have anything, even a super warm sweater to add, for the really cold 10 degree weather days. So, for next year I will make sure to buy at least one layering sweater and some other season-specific items.

My Summer Plans

I know this post is kinda late and it’s already summer. I still haven’t done a formal purging/review of my wardrobe like I had planned. I also didn’t put away my more wintery shirts. But, that being said, I still have my “uniform” and I love it. I figure that after summer I will replace my worn out skirts, this way I won’t worry when I’m at the park with my kids in new clothes.

Overall I’ve been loving the simplicity that my wardrobe offers, how fast it is to get ready each morning and how good I feel in the pieces I have. I highly recommend it to you!

What is your seasonal approach to keeping a neat wardrobe?

Until next time,
Shaindy

  1. I’m trying to adapt this for my kids. It’s a slow and hard process for me because I like most of their cloths! How did you decide what stays and what goes?

    • I noticed that there are some clothing I wear more often than others. For the clothes I didn’t wear so often I had to decide if there was a reason to keep it. Usually there wasn’t because I didn’t like how it looked, it was old or it didn’t fit properly.

Let me know how you did this for your kids! My kids don’t really have a lot of stuff, so it’s not as much of a problem for us.
