Making Lunches

I always dread making lunches for my kids. It takes so much time and I never really know what to give them. That’s why they usually have the same lunch everyday. I only make sandwiches a few times a week, but even just putting all the items in the bag is so time consuming. I usually work pretty efficiently, but lately I’ve just been so lazy about making lunches. I always used to have them prepared the night before, all ready to go, but for the past few days, I just made sure sandwiches were made and that was it. That is also part of the reason I’ve been late to work for the past few days, but don’t tell anyone…

So, you must be wondering- what do I give my kids and why does it take so long?  Well, this is what they look like:

Just kidding.  Oh, how I wish I could make lunches like that.  But since I don’t, I’ll never have to worry about my kids being made fun of.

Back to the point.  While I love the picture of the lunch above, I don’t think I would ever spend that much time making lunch for my kids. Lunches here are pretty standard and are always packed with more food than necessary (that’s just the Jewish mother in me. I would NEVER want them to go hungry).

As to why it takes so long… I have no idea!  I think it’s one of two things.  One- I don’t like doing it, so it takes me longer to get my act together and Two- I don’t know if it really takes a long time or it just feels like an unnaturally long time. For lunch each kid usually has a sandwich (peanut butter and jelly or cream cheese… whatever’s in the house) and a mixture of snacks.

Some snacks I usually have at home:

  • crackers
  • cereal bars
  • granola bars
  • yogurt
  • rice pudding
  • cheese
  • melon, cut up fruit
  • oatmeal (only for DS2)
  • bananas (my go-to snack… easy, healthy and budget friendly)
  • raisins
  • fruit cups

I try to only give one “junk” snack a day, but I guess that also depends on what’s on hand.

So, what does the final product really look like?  Honestly, it just looks like a bunch of baggies thrown into a lunch box.  Haven’t gotten any complaints yet!

Until next time,
Shaindy
