Oatmeal Packets

My kids love oatmeal and for convenience I’d always buy the packets.  I never really paid much attention to the price of the packets vs. price of the containers until the last time I was in the supermarket.  I couldn’t believe how inexpensive the containers are!  I remembered this post I read on how easy it was to make your own oatmeal packets and was inspired to try it myself!

Here’s the recipe from Lifeasmom.com (I opted to make these pareve):

In each bag, I put in:

  • 1/4 cup quick oats
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

When you’re ready to eat it, all you have to do is add 1/4 cup of water and microwave for 1-1.5 minutes.  Easy shmeezy!
The quick oats were $1.99 for the container and the brown sugar was $1.19 for a bag.  I had all the other ingredients on hand so in total I spent $3.18 for a grand total of 50 packets!

For daycare I have to label all the food I send, so since there were so many bags I ended up printing lables with cooking instructions.  The kids loved helping me put the “stickers” on the bags and all this was done before we knew it!

Until next time,
Shaindy
