Encouragement for Jewish Working Moms

I never thought I would be one of those Jewish working moms, but almost 5 years later, here I am. Still working. And no sign of stopping.

jewish working momsIt’s hard balancing everything, so I was super glad when my friend sent me this video.  It’s super encouraging to hear from other Jewish working moms who are happy with their decision to work.  I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did.

  1. I’m a working mother and I know this dance well.
The situation she’s describing works fine when all is on track and going well. On a regular day it’s nice to sit on the couch with your kids for a schmooze.
But it goes off when your family particularly needs you and because of work commitments you just “can’t” be there. Things like when someone is sick, when someone is stressed at school and need some time out, when your mother is visiting from overseas, when your husband is having extra demands in his life, the week before Pesach… all these are times when a woman wants to be more available for their family, but a working woman just can’t.
You squeeze in all these precious moments into whatever time and energy is left to you from the framework of your demanding job. You miss out big time.
My philosophy is that every woman should be honest with herself about what she needs in order to truly nurture herself and her family. She should work towards a goal of working on her terms – earning enough money in a schedule that fits in with her priorities, rather than the other way around.
It will take time to achieve this goal – probably years and a lot of hard work. But at least you are going in the right direction.
