My First Overnight Business Trip

In October 2021 I went on my first overnight business trip. While in the past I’ve posted about the mom-guilt involved in traveling for work, this trip was different. My kids are older now and while they need adults around they are much more self-sufficient. They can get dressed and ready each morning on their own, shower on their own, and do most of their homework on their own.

I’m not gonna lie. I was really excited to go away for a few days. I needed a break! Even though I was working during the day I only had to worry about myself, which I wasn’t used to. I got ready in the morning in record time and got to relax in the evening.

In the past I had done day trips to Columbus, OH and Wilmington, DE. They were exciting and exhausting and I traveled as a representative of my team. This meeting was different. I traveled to Dallas, TX where my entire team met to collaborate in person. Due to Covid and the fact that we all work out of different offices this was the first time we met in person.

This was a trip of firsts:

  • First time flying alone
  • First time staying in a hotel alone
  • First time staying in a Four Seasons hotel
  • First time being issued and using a corporate credit card

I did do some prep before leaving my family: I made sure all The laundry was done and everyone had clothes to wear for the rest of the week. I had to buy kosher food to bring along. And since this was the first time working in person in over a year I had to buy some work appropriate clothing and shoes.

The trip was an overall success and it really felt great to travel on my own for the first time. I spoke to my kids every evening and realized I didn’t need to worry about them. My husband took great care of them and they got to bond with each other. If the opportunity to travel comes up again I’d definitely take advantage of it!

Do you travel for work? How often? Do you enjoy it?

Until next time,
Shaindy
